How to verify a real-estate professional's licence in Canada

In brief

In Canada, a real-estate professional's licence is verified on their provincial regulator's public register: OACIQ for real-estate brokerage in Quebec, AMF for mortgage brokerage, RECO in Ontario, RECA in Alberta, and so on. The table below gives the official register — and how to use it — for each profession and province, including the cases where no mandatory provincial licence exists.

Worth knowing (common error)

Mortgage brokerage in Quebec falls under the AMF since May 1, 2020 — no longer the OACIQ. Many sites still get this wrong. The OACIQ only regulates real-estate brokerage.

How to read a register

  1. Search by name or licence number.
  2. Confirm the status is active (not suspended or revoked).
  3. Check the disciplinary history if shown.

A "suspended" or "revoked" status prohibits practice.

Professions with no mandatory provincial register

Home inspectors are not subject to a mandatory provincial licence in most provinces: AIBQ (Quebec), OAHI (Ontario) or CAHPI are voluntary associations. Without a mandatory register, check liability insurance, membership in a recognized association, and reviews instead — exactly what the Payotte score factors in.
